Interracial Dating

What if you walked down the street and you saw this couple?

Or better yet, what if you saw this couple?

Interracial dating seems to be the new trend over the years and seem to be increasing as time goes on. On the U.S. Census website, they have many statistics about interracial marriages. It shows that from 1980-2002, there have been a significant increase in couples who are interracial whether black and white, Hispanic and black, Hispanic and white, Asian and black, etc. From the statistics given, it is probably likely that the trend would continue increasing in this day and age.

Even though the statistics show that there are a number of American inhabitants that are interracial, there are many others that are against this type of mixing. I can think of a few reasons one would be anti-interracial dating. One might say that they are going to lose their culture. By marrying or dating a outside their culture, a person can be influenced to forget their family history and/or background. Some people feel that it is a threat against traditions that they are used to. For example, a Middle Eastern man does not celebrate Christmas while a white American might and this would cause conflict. Another reason one might claim to be anti-interracial would be because they feel that a person dating or marrying outside their race is unconsciously turning their backs and looking down upon their own race. Those with this view feel that people who are interracial dating feel as if they could not find anyone within their race good enough for them.

My opinion on the topic is pro-interracial couples. My view on this subject is that whatever makes you happy you should go for it. There will be obstacles for an interracial couple to face, but if they love each other and their bond is strong, nothing should be able to compromise that; they would be able to work through the difficulties. I believe that being against interracial dating could close off a persons options for true love and give them a small chance to find their "perfect" match. As a rebuttal for the issues that people who are anti-interracial couples might give, there are always ways to solve those issues. For example, to preserve a persons culture, you can go to church, you can see family and you could even visit the country of that culture. Another example of working past the conflicts interracial dating/marriage might cause would be to observe Christmas and Ramadan another year or a Muslim and a Christian. Being able to compromise would be a big way to reduce the conflict interracial dating and/or marriages can produce.

At the end of the day, dating is between the two people in the relationship. If they do not see a problem with it, neither should anyone on the outside looking in.
